Only on Amazon: “The Man In The High Castle”

What if everything you knew was a lie? What if the Axis powers had won WWII? What if the United States of America was divided by the military force of Japan and Nazi era Germany?

Based on Philip K. Dick’s award-winning novel and adapted by Frank Spotniz, The Man in the High Castle explores what it would be like if the Allied Powers had lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. Starring Rufus Sewell (John Adams), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars) and Alexa Davalos (Mob City). Executive produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner).  Written by Amazon Studios

AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead

It’s only been a few weeks since AMC premiered the companion series for The Walking Dead, and you know we have been watching. I personally went in with no expectations of the new series, but it has been a pleasant surprise. maxresdefault

With the launch of any new show comes a few bumps. There’s also the fun of the buildup. The world is not yet consumed by the outbreak, so there are very few of the dead walking around. To some, this might be a problem, and discourage folks from tuning in. It’s also an assumption that the show is about zombies. It isn’t.

Much like the original series, it is a story of survivors. We have had zombie films for decades, and television has been all but devoured by them in the last few years. (No pun intended…)

Honestly, we don’t need another show that is nonstop zombie from start to finish. It’s television, and that type of show just wouldn’t survive. The dialogue would also really suck. (Remember, the dead don’t get lines…

If you have concerns over the slow approach to the mass destruction, the storm is coming. Longevity is the goal of any television product. Let’s face it. Instant gratification is not for TV. Movies exist to fill that 2 hours or less appetite.

Get to know your characters, and you will appreciate them for it later. It could also be helpful to snack on some beef jerky while viewing, if you absolutely need constant devouring of flesh. You never know when you might become one of them. Just remember to chew your food before you swallow.

This is some fine ass drumming – no pun intended!

Ok, so there is a pun, or a bun. I’m not sure which. Just know it is completely consensual, and nobody made an ass of themselves in the making of this video.

The NEW console wars – lightweight, or future heavy hitter?

Next gen gaming is a term that seems to never die. Even as the newest tech releases, there’s always another lurking around the corner. It never ends.

Then there’s new entertainment tech… In recent years, televisions have changed. They have become much more than the old clunky box in the corner. They’ve become “smart,” and “connected,” leading to a whole new world of possibilities. There’s also the add-on features, two of which we will focus on in this article.

Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition

51iggWRpOgL._SL1000_This device is scheduled for release on October 5, and is planned to include a controller that very much resembles a current console controller. It also utilizes a pre-existing library of games available from Amazon, courtesy of Amazon’s previous tablet offerings.

In short, this means mobile games.

While we don’t expect the level of detail present in some of the top dog dedicated consoles, it would be safe to assume that is only a minor time restraint. Tech doesn’t slow down.

This is a streaming box, with micro SD connectivity, 2 GHz processor, 2 Gb of memory, and a dedicated GPU. Amazon has put some serious thought into this little device, and it has great potential to attract game developers. (Also note, the tablet offerings already have developers…)

The NEW Apple TV

The Apple TV is a device that has been lurking around for quite some time. Earlier machines contained storage, which was removed a few years ago. The new machine brings back storage options, and adds support for 3rd party controllers, and an app store.

apple-tv-mainWhile this device is limited to Apple’s A8 chip, it does utilize the same GPU tech found in the mobile devices. It also has a major advantage. TONS of games already exist on those mobile devices, and many may be ported to be compatible with this new Apple TV.

This one also seems to be targeting the “casual gamer” on launch, much like Nintendo did with the release of the original Wii. This alone may drive this device into homes, and future updates should see a boost in capabilities.

Regardless of what either of these devices do on launch, mobile gaming is a platform that will see a lot of future development. Many of the console game developers have already made a shift into this market. The trend will follow the cash flow, and the cash flow will follow the ease of access.

There’s also realistic expectation… Neither of these devices will compare to the modern console offerings, but they will eventually surpass them. Tech never stops for nostalgia, and very few of you are still clinging to cassette tapes or 8-tracks.

BB-8 by Sphero brings a new hope to Star Wars toys

Yes, you see what we did there. This pun WAS intended.

The new BB-8 from Sphero launched just a few weeks ago, and it is everything we thought it would be. Yes, Shane actually bought one on release day. It’s a good thing too, because it also pretty much sold out on release day.

If you’re not familiar with Sphero, they are a company known for making robotic devices that interact with your smart phones and tablets. This new little ball droid from the upcoming relaunch of Star Wars is a very fitting product for them to offer.

If you missed the initial offering, more are expected in October. We will say though, hold out for the Sphero version. There is another BB-8 toy offering that is radio controlled, but we would expect that one to get a DUI on open roads. It just isn’t the same quality.

As for the one we bought, no we are not keeping it. He will go on to a much bigger purpose. We are giving him away in a raffle, and all proceeds will benefit low income families this upcoming holiday season. We hope he goes to a good home.

Stiff returns October 1, with both middle fingers held high!

There comes a time, when you just have to trim the fat. We have done just that.11182106_762882433827143_3586638388620920006_n

Those of you that have followed us as Stiff Magazine since 2010 already know we have been on a hiatus since the beginning of 2014. So far, we have not offered any explanation as to why, until today.

In October of 2013, something unthinkable happened. I woke up, in the middle of the night, experiencing muscle spasms that took the use of my legs. This was the beginning of months of medical treatment, and needle injections to my spine. It cost me nearly everything, including the job that funded all of my projects. Stiff Magazine and Monstercon are at the top of that list.

Despite the threats to the financial requirements, I pushed on, but I also noticed a vile little monster lurking in the corner. That monster’s name is Ego.

Ego is a fat and bloated little bastard, with a few faces attached to his personality. Ego expected more than he deserved, so I decided to starve him. When Ego violated basic rules of the family, he was reprimanded. Ego was very defiant, and was eventually pushed toward resignation of his positions. Good riddance.

To be very clear, this is not about one person, but a small team of them. Journalistic integrity is something they never knew, and still have yet to learn. Others will soon see them for the greed that drives them, and will also quit feeding the ego monster.

So why are we speaking up now? Simple. The term is betrayal of trust.

On September 5, 2015, a series of images were shared by our Twitter account. These images contained pornographic images, and were not authorized by us, or MonsterCon, LLC management. They did come from a former authorized user’s phone. Since only 2 people were ever authorized to access that Twitter account via iPhone, the list becomes very short on probable suspects. Both are former volunteers.

A little more detail is revealed in the IP search, and narrows the trace to one specific likely person. We will be handing this information over to Charlotte police this weekend, along with a formal report.

Remember folks, while my spine may be jacked up, my middle fingers work quite well. I don’t need much else for typing.
